2013 Kia Optima Review

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

2013_kia_optima
The famous automotive leader Bob Lutz once said it costs as much to build an ugly car as it does a beautiful one. In the 2013 Kia Optima sedan, Mr. Lutz's words have been proven spot on. Costing no more than a comparably-equipped Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, the Optima for 2013 outshines its competition with stunning good looks, compact car-like fuel economy, a great warranty and ever-improving resale figures. Add to the mix a panoramic sunroof and heated and cooling seats, and the Optima might appear to be the bargain of the century. Models range from the well-equipped entry LX to the luxurious EX to the fuel-efficient Hybrid. There's even a high-performance turbo model that will shame some premium brands costing tens of thousands more.

You'll Like This Car If...
If you're looking for a fuel-efficient family sedan that isn't easily lost in a crowded parking lot, the 2013 Kia Optima is it. Combining stunning styling with an affordable price and an unbeatable warranty, the 2013 Kia Optima goes beyond the basic family sedan in features, performance and resale value.

You May Not Like This Car If...
The 2013 Kia Optima's styling may be a bit too over-the-top for some, and its sloping rear roof severely cuts into rear-seat headroom. Also, some of the Optima's interior plastics still look and feel a bit hard.

What's New for 2013
For 2013, Kia has added a Limited model to the SX trim than includes Nappa leather seating, LED daytime running lights, red brake calipers and 18-inch chrome wheels. The manual transmission on the LX trim has been dropped, as has the turbo version of the EX.

Driving It
Driving Impressions
After just a short time behind the wheel of the 2013 Kia Optima, we came away impressed, both by the car's driving dynamics and its 2.4-liter 4-cyinder engine. Confident cornering aided by nicely-weighted steering encouraged us to push the Optima sedan hard, and the electronic traction and stability controls always intervened when we pushed a bit too hard. The naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter engine develops an impressive 200 horsepower. This gasoline direct-injection engine is smooth, powerful and able to deliver 35 highway miles on a single gallon of gasoline. Whether it was passing slow-moving traffic or climbing steep grades, the 2013 Kia Optima's 4-cylinder engine never failed to impress us. There is also a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine for those who crave more power. Equally as smooth and quiet as the 2.4-liter engine, the 2.0 turbo pumps out 274 horsepower, but is mated to the same 6-speed Sportmatic manually-shifting automatic transmission.

Favorite Features
EXTERIOR STYLING
The 2013 Kia Optima sedan is one of the sportiest, most stylish mid-size sedans out there. We'd even put it up against the styling of some $40,000 European luxury brands.

TURBOCHARGED 2.0-LITER ENGINE
Who needs a V6 anyway? This four-cylinder engine has 274 horsepower and an EPA highway estimate of 34 mpg.

Vehicle Details
Interior

On upper-end EX and SX trims, customers can opt for such extravagant features as a dual-panel moonroof, heated and cooling front seats, heated rear seats and a voice-activated navigation and infotainment system similar to Ford's SYNC. While we love the look of the 2013 Kia Optima sedan's interior, some of the plastic on the dash and steering wheel still lack the quality look and feel found in Honda, Mazda and even some GM and Ford products. The front seats are pretty comfortable for tall folks, but the Optima's sharply-raked rear roofline may cause some headroom issues for the rear-seat passengers.

Exterior

Looking a bit like something from the sci-fi movie Tron, the Kia's 2013 Optima is a bold and original piece of work from the ground up. From its cross-hatch front grille and long sweptback headlight housing, to the weather-vane-style wheels on the SX trim, the Optima looks likes it's going fast even when it's parked. There is a duality about the Optima sedan for 2013, speaking to both luxury and performance all while masking its true nature to serve duty as a humble family sedan. Even base trims offer such nice features as heated side mirrors, chrome door-handle inserts and 16-inch wheels.

Notable Standard Equipment
Every 2013 Kia Optima family sedan offers Bluetooth phone connectivity, iPod/USB audio connectivity, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and a cooling glove box that keeps drinks chilled. As for safety, the Optima has an impressive array of features including six airbags and electronic stability control. Like other base-priced models in its class, the entry-level Optima includes 16-inch steel wheels and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Notable Optional Equipment
Optional equipment highlights include a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, Nappa leather seating, Infinity sound system, touch-screen navigation system, UVO infotainment voice-active system and rearview camera. In addition to a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, the top-of-the-line 2013 Kia Optima SX and SX Limited models offer a lightly sport-tuned suspension and more aggressive styling cues. The 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid features lightweight wheels in your choice of standard 16-inch or sporty 17-inchers, as well as the EcoMinder LCD panel with graphics and lighting that change to show when the car is achieving maximum fuel economy.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Kia Optima sedan doesn't offer the option of a V6, and why should it? The standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder is nearly as powerful as some V6 engines and gets far better fuel economy. In fact, it has more power and better fuel economy than many other 4-cylinder cars in the category, as well. Those wanting more power can opt for the turbocharged 2.0 liter (SX trims only). Only one transmission is offered: A 6-speed Sportronic automatic with manual-shift mode. The Optima Hybrid uses the 2.4-liter engine mated to a 40-horsepower electric motor for a combined output of 206 horsepower.

2013 Kia Sorento to have more power trains, better economy

2013-kia-sorento
Kia will be releasing the new 2013 Sorento to markets later this year and the newly-upgraded crossover will include revised GDI and diesel engines.

When the 2013 Kia Sorento compact utility vehicle (CUV) enters the market later this year, it will include some huge changes to its platform. A range of gasoline and diesel engines will be available, most being tuned for specific markets, with fine-tuning to the Theta II 2.4 GDI and R2.2 TCI diesel engines.

The Sorento will come with a standard six-speed transmission in either manual or automatic, no matter the market, and will come in a choice of 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive (2WD, 4WD) with a front-wheel-centric drive train. The 4WD option is on-demand and includes an automatic torque differential to send power from front to rear and back as needed. An optional "lock" mode splits power 50:50 between front and rear and disables the torque differential.

Kia Picks Up the Product Pace

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Ar-308139987
After a slow 2012 for new products, Kia will be back on the gas in 2013.

A redesigned Forte compact sedan will be launched in January, followed by a five-door hatchback and a coupe by next summer. The upscale Cadenza sedan arrives at Kia's U.S. dealerships next summer.

A rear-wheel-drive flagship sedan, known as the K9 in South Korea and the Quoris in overseas markets, arrives stateside for the 2015 model year.

Here's the rundown for Kia for the 2013-15 model years from company and other sources.

Cadenza: Kia will launch the Cadenza sedan next summer as a 2014 model. The upscale, front-wheel-drive sedan shares a platform with the current generation Hyundai Azera and is expected to be powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine used in the Korean version of the Cadenza, known as the K7.

The Cadenza, nearly five inches longer than the Optima mid-sized sedan, will sit above the Optima in Kia's lineup. Pricing is expected to be between the high $30,000s and low $40,000s, Kia Motors America's sales boss Tom Loveless has said.

Forte: Kia's compact sedan will be redesigned for the 2014 model year. A modified version of the Hyundai-Kia compact platform, used by the Hyundai Elantra and the European Kia Cee'd compact, will underpin the second-generation Forte.

The redesigned Forte sedan will be launched in January. The two-door Forte Koup and a five-door hatchback are scheduled to go on sale next summer.

A source says Kia is aiming for at least 40 mpg on the highway with the Forte's 1.8-liter four-cylinder base engine.

GT Concept: Kia is wrestling with whether to build a production version of its head-turning GT Concept car shown at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show.

The rwd concept car is powered by a 395-hp, 3.3-liter turbocharged V-6 with gasoline direct injection.

Peter Schreyer, Kia's global design boss, is pushing management to green-light the project. But a source says a business case strong enough to put the car into production has yet to materialize fully.

Optima: The Optima mid-sized sedan was redesigned for the 2011 model year. A freshening is planned for next summer for the 2014 model year.

Rio: The subcompact was redesigned in 2011.

Quoris/K9: Kia has given the green light for U.S. sales of its rwd flagship, known as the K9 in South Korea and the Quoris in overseas markets, according to a source with knowledge of Kia's plans.

The large sedan should go on sale sometime in mid-2014 as a 2015 model.

Kia says a 3.8-liter V-6 engine with gasoline direct injection producing about 330 hp will power the flagship in overseas markets starting in its second year of global sales, which begin in the fourth quarter. The engine will be paired with a new eight-speed transmission.

The car will boast active safety features unseen on Kia vehicles to date, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot detection and other systems.

Sorento: Kia's top-selling crossover gets a freshening for the 2014 model year, and the next-generation Sorento should arrive two or three years later, but the precise timing is uncertain.

The redesign will place the Sorento on the chassis underpinning the upcoming 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe.

Soul: The next generation of Kia's funky subcompact crossover is slated to arrive stateside in late summer 2013 as a 2014 model. The redesigned Soul will be built on a modified version of the Hyundai-Kia subcompact platform underpinning the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent. The current Soul is based on Hyundai-Kia's older subcompact platform.

The 2014 Soul's sheet metal will be new, but the car's proportions will remain intact to maintain its distinctive look.

Sportage: Kia engineers updated the Sportage's suspension for a smoother ride for the 2013 model year.

A freshened Sportage is scheduled to arrive in the late summer of 2013 with a new grille and fascia for the 2014 model year.

New sheet metal and major platform changes are in the works for either the 2015 or 2016 model year, but a source says the launch timing has yet to be determined.

Kia Soul Opts for "Oomph"

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

2012_kia_soul_
Kia has been surprising many buyers lately, with cutting-edge styling and improved reliability.

So maybe it's no surprise that the 2012 Kia Soul, now entering its third year of production, has a new soul.

Under its hood lurks one of two updated engines. Base Soul models get a 138-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder -- a boost of 16 horsepower from 2011. Soul+ and Soul! models get a new 164-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder- up 22 hp from 2011. Both powerplants are now available with a six-speed manual or, new for 2012, a six-speed automatic transmission.

By replacing the four-speed automatic with a six-speed and boosting horsepower, this year's model is both faster and more frugal. While you might be tempted to get the base engine, opt for the larger, more powerful one. It's no fuel hog, giving up one mpg in fuel economy to the smaller engine with an EPA rating of 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway.

As you would expect of a subcompact SUV, the Soul is quite agile, although the ride is very firm. Large bumps can upset it, but it's never unsafe. Active front headrests, anti-lock brakes, brake assist, stability control and Hill Start Assist are among the vehicle's standard safety features.

The turning circle is fairly compact, making parking easy, even for inept drivers.

Despite the upgraded engines, the cabin can get noisy, but it's more than tolerable. Still, it would have been nice to get a bit more insulation; it would impart a greater sense of quality.

Certainly that's the cue one gets from the list of available features, including an all-new 350-watt seven-speaker Infinity audio system, keyless remote entry, heated front seats, leather seat trim, automatic climate control, navigation system and push button start.

All Kia Souls get electric power steering, air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows, door locks and mirrors, available Sirius XM Satellite Radio with three-month subscription and MP3 connectivity.

The test car's interior belied its price, despite the hard plastics used throughout. Thanks go to the rich interior color. If you want a Soul, look over your color choices carefully.

And while we're talking about visuals, the 2012 model receives revised front and rear fascias, headlamps, taillights, side mirrors and wheels. It's a subtle change that updates the Soul's look to the rest of the Kia line.

These updates add to the Soul's strengths: its comfortable upright seating position, the easy-to-use controls and a cabin that's surprisingly roomy for such a small vehicle. Even rear seat passengers will find the seats agreeable.

And the best part: its price. It starts at just $13,900 for the base Soul. The test vehicle, a Soul!, started at $19,600, although it lacked such uplevel options as heated leather seats. So it's easy to break 20 grand if you load one up.

Still, the Soul's soul is one of funky cheerfulness and utility. Backed with good power and reasonable fuel economy, it's one Soul with which anyone can empathize.

Kia Wins Three New Design Awards

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Kia-design-awards-1
Ever since Peter Schreyer took control of Kia design, they have been on a roll. Not only his designs gave the company a new face and increased their sales like they wouldn’t believe, he’s bringing in design awards almost every month. They recently snatched three new awards in the Automotive Brand Contest 2012.

In this contest the Kia GT Concept – revealed at IAA back in 2011 – was chosen as the winner of the concept award, while the new generation Kia Cee’d won two titles for exterior and interior design. With the Cee’d judged were impressed by the car’s styling typically found on a sporty coupe, but space and functionality of a five-door hatch.

Cee’d design features include  chrome-framed glasshouse and muscular lines on the bonnet, complemented inside by an ergonomic, driver-oriented control panel and refined interior. In the case of the GT, which is a far cry from anything we’ve ever seen with a Kia badge on it, it was inspired by 1970s grand tourers, and combines supple, muscular proportions with a sophisticated, elegant four-seat interior.

Kia is still striving at design and hasn’t even reached its peak yet. The recently revealed 2013 Kia Forte is another example of this progress.
