Yelp

"I went in on a Thursday, met with Adrian & Victor, told them the car and color I was looking for, how much I wanted to pay each month and drove off Friday night with my 2013 Dark Cherry Kia Optima.  They did not pressure me at all and even stayed late to close the deal.  Thanks guys, and you too Bill in finance.  AWESOME JOB!" -- Jacqueline E.

2014 Kia Forte Sedan offers lowest in-segment price

2014_kia_forte_sedan

Kia Motors under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer, is one of the globes fastest growing automakers. They offer cutting-edge technologies, premium amenities, affordable pricing and the lowest cost of ownership in the industry. Kia has announced the launch of the newly redesigned 2014 Kia Forte and it will come with the lowest base price in the compact car segment with a starting price of $15,900, plus $800 destination.

The new 2014 Forte starred in Kia’s popular “Hot Bots” Super Bowl ad this January, and represents one of the best small car values on the road. Kia has been known for value, and now they are beginning to be known for some cutting-edge technologies on their cars. The all-new compact sedan is packed with new technologies for younger buyers, including Kia’s next-generation UVO in-vehicle infotainment and telematics system with eServices.

Forte competes in the competitive compact segment

The 2014 Forte Sedan has received a total makeover and is now bigger and sportier than the outgoing model. It has new European styling that will appeal to a new buyer that Kia is trying to attract. And with an MSRP of $15,900, it looks like they hit their mark. The Forte competes in the very competitive compact segment and gets a new exterior sporty profile, two new powertrains, and greater interior space that should help it stand out.

The 2014 Forte is offered in three models:  LX with a 1.8-liter engine and manual transmission starting at $15,900; LX with a 1.8-liter engine and automatic transmission with a base price of $17,400; and EX with a 2.0-liter GDI powerplant and automatic transmission beginning at $19,400.  Destination charge for all three models is an additional $800. The more powerful 2.0-liter 173-horsepower GDI model offers fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon city/36 highway/28 combined.

Two trim levels to choose from

The all-new 2014 Forte arrives with upscale amenities and rides on an all new chassis. And it comes with features not expected in this price range and segment. The base LX model comes standard with steering wheel-mounted audio controls, SiriusXM Satellite Radio3, Bluetooth, and heated power-folding mirrors. The optional Popular Package (LX A/T only) adds 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry with remote trunk release and a sliding front armrest.

The EX trim brings a more powerful 2.0-liter GDI engine with Sportmatic shifting. It also comes standard with Kia’s next-generation UVO in-vehicle infotainment and telematics system with eServices. Other standard features include remote keyless entry with trunk opener, Rear Camera Display5, a sliding center armrest and a cooling glove box.

Optional Premium Package

Features found on the optional Premium Package include heated front and rear seats, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with class-exclusive air-cooled ventilation, leather seat trim, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and push button start with Smart Key and a heated steering wheel.  A Technology Package, adds HID headlights, LED tail lights, a 4.2-inch color LCD cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear center ventilation.

New Forte 5-door hot hatch is coming

Also look for Kia to roll out a new 2014 Forte 5-door hot hatch with a new turbocharged engine. The European-inspired hatchback SX is powered by an all-new 1.6-liter gasoline direct-injected (GDI) turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. When its compared with the competition, it should be the fastest compact in North America. Pricing has not been announced on the new Forte 5-door. The combined sportiness of the SX with the useful hatcback, along with the new Sedan, should give Kia a “duel-threat” in the compact car segment.

The new Forte is lower, longer and wider and offers a sportier and more upscale design for global buyers. It comes with a new engine with better performance, greater interior space and a wider array of premium amenities than the outgoing model. Look for the all-new 2014 Kia Forte Sedan to go on sale within the next 30 days. The new 2014 5-door hatch is expected to go on sale in the third quarter of 2013 here in the U.S.

Maintenance Tip of the Week

Tire-wear-when-to-rotate-tires-fisher-auto

Rotating your tires helps to distribute tire wear evenly and ensures that you’ll get the maximum road life out of them. The first rotation is especially important.Your owner’s manual should specify both rotation period and pattern. If not, rotate your tires every 6,000 to 7,500 miles (9,700 to 12,000 km) — your tire dealer should know the correct pattern of tire rotation.

2013 Kia Soul

EXTERIOR
The Soul really speaks for itself in terms of exterior design. When we first saw it back in 2008, it was aggressively styled with straight lines and square corners, standing out against a backdrop of progressively sleeker cars. With several other similarly shaped cars on the road today, the Soul is no longer the odd man out.
Its modernized-mail-truck look will either appeal to you or not. Between its shape, its features and its fun, youthful marketing, the Soul tends to appeal to a younger market, but quite a few Boomers are driving them, as well, thanks to the Kia's retirement-friendly price tag and hip-high front seats, which make it easy to get in and out without too much strain or bending.
One of our reviewers came close to purchasing a Soul for her own small family, based upon its functionality and family-friendly budget, but she concluded she just couldn't quite jump on the Soul train as a 40-something.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FEATURES
The Soul's boxy shape lends itself to practical interior cabin space. Backseat passengers not only have plenty of headroom, but also fantastic visibility due to the large expanses of glass and the slightly raised, theater-style rear seat. For young kids with a tendency to motion sickness, the extra-wide view might just keep you from having to stock your glove box full of gallon-sized Ziplocs.

The 39 inches of backseat legroom was plenty of space for all three of my girls' (ages 8, 10 and 12) gangly, growing legs. That's quite impressive compared with the Nissan Cube's 35.5 inches of rear legroom. The Scion xB falls between the two with 38 inches of rear legroom. There was just enough seat width to squeeze all three of my kids in side by side, with just one of them in a slim Bubble Bum booster seat.

This extra backseat room, however, comes at the expense of cargo space; there's just 19.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the backseat. I was quite surprised by the tiny cargo space the first time I opened up the cargo door. I was expecting more of that Magic School Bus effect, seeing how large this small car otherwise feels on the inside. A few boxes of snacks and water bottles from the warehouse store were about all I could fit. Families with large strollers, wheelchairs or suitcases may need to rethink this car. Still, the Soul's rear space beats the Cube, which has just 11.4 cubic feet of space. With the backseat folded, the Soul has 53.4 cubic feet of cargo volume while the Cube boasts 58.1 cubic feet.

Storage areas throughout the Soul's interior helped keep my sometimes-chaotic family-car life a little bit more under control. A small center console up front was just large enough to stash my phone and snacks. In-door storage bins in all four doors, plus netted pockets on the front seatbacks, held all my other odds and ends.

As the driver, I had access to almost every feature that has become important to me while filtering out the noise of extra features that I don't use (the lighted stereo speakers that flash along with the music were a gimmicky trick the kids thought was cool — and I turned off the second they stepped out of the car).

I appreciated the remote keyless entry, which is standard on the Soul! trim level, with the added benefit of push-button start that came as part of a $2,500 Premium Package. This package also gave my family two-tone, easy-to-wipe-clean leather seats that were heated up front for my driving pleasure

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT
Storage Compartments (Puny, Fair, Ample, Galore): Ample
Cargo/Trunk Space (Puny, Fair, Ample, Galore): Fair

SENSE AND STYLE
Family Friendly (Not Really, Fair, Great, Excellent): Fair
Fun-Factor (None, Some, Good Times, Groove-On): Good Times

BEHIND THE WHEEL
The base Soul has a 138-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder. The Soul+ and my Soul! test car have an upgraded 164-hp, 2.0-liter engine. All Souls have front-wheel drive, and the base and Soul+ come with either a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic. The Soul! is automatic only. Mine had plenty of zip and zing for daily, around-town driving, even while in Eco mode, which can help drivers improve gas mileage. On the highway, however, you really have to nurse the Soul to keep it up to speed, unlike other vehicles that seem to practically drive themselves. Because it lacks cruise control, lots of highway driving in a base Soul would definitely become tiresome.

Also contributing to driver fatigue over long distances is the Soul's cabin noise. While the engine is really quite quiet, the Soul shows its budget pricing through lack of noise insulation. Road and wind noise are immediately apparent when driving this car.
My car's EPA-estimated fuel economy was 23/28 mpg city/highway. The 2.0-liter with the manual transmission gets an estimated 24/29 mpg. The Soul+ with an automatic transmission is eligible for an optional Eco Package (not the Eco mode that comes in all Souls) with special tires and a provision that turns the engine off and on at stoplights, for an estimated increase of 1 mpg over the regular 2.0-liter automatic.

The base Soul, with its 1.6-liter engine, is rated 25/30 mpg regardless of transmission.
The Soul's tight suspension is fun and sporty-feeling around town, but its inability to absorb and recover from bumps became disconcerting at highway speeds. For example, when taking a curved ramp from one highway to another, the Soul jumped around a bit over the rough bump where the two connected, requiring me to focus and hang on more tightly to the steering wheel so it wouldn't skip out from under me in the curve.

The Soul's tight 34.4-foot turning circle made quick errands a blast, turning on a dime into tight parking spaces that others passed up.

SAFETY
The 2013 Kia Soul is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick, having received the institute's top rating of Good in front, side, rear and roof-strength tests. It hasn't undergone the small-overlap front test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Soul an overall crash-test rating of four out of five stars.

As has been required since the 2012 model year, the Soul has standard antilock brakes, electronic stability control and traction control. The Soul has standard dual advanced airbags in front, front-seat-mounted side-impact airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.
The Soul! that I drove also had a standard backup camera display (it's optional on the Soul+ and not available on the base model). While it's not yet a requirement on cars, we anticipate backup cameras being mandated in the coming years, so having one standard in the Soul! added to my peace of mind in a house full of my kids, nephews, kids' friends and pets.

For families installing child-safety seats, the Soul's lower Latch anchors are shallow within the seat bight, but don't offer much clearance on the top and bottom of the anchor. This may make installing child-safety seats with rigid Latch hooks difficult. However, seats that use Latch hooks on flexible nylon webbing should be easier to install.

Kia to green-light GT and Provo for production?

Kia is looking to inject a bit more performance life into its brand, and according to Auto Express, the company is looking at creating sporty models based on two of its recent concept cars, the GT four-door from the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and the Provo hybrid hatchback that debuted in Geneva last week.

"The GT is close to being approved and going into production, but, as with all our cars, they have to be developed on a sound financial footing," Benny Oeyen, Kia Europe's VP of marketing and product planning, told Auto Express. When it debuted, the GT four-door was powered by a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6, reportedly good for 389 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Provo, on the other hand, could stand as a sort of halo car for the company's B-segment offerings. It would ride on the same front-wheel-drive platform as the Rio compact, though Kia says it's eager to keep the concept's gasoline-electric powertrain intact. "Our brand is currently rational, but there's space for a B-coupe," says Oeyen. Of course, the company would indeed have to look at different naming possibilities for its B-segment coupe, since the week-old Provo is already stirring up some controversy.

Kia has not disclosed any sort of timeline for when the cars may officially get the green light or when they would arrive in production form. From where we sit, some sporty Kias sound good to us, and if anything, the GT and Provo concepts certainly seem like promising building blocks for new products.

Maintenance Tip of the Week

Flush-and-fill

To avoid problems resulting from rust, dirt and mineral deposits in the cooling system, it's best to give it an internal cleaning every year or two.

It's easy. Here's how:
1. Begin with the engine cold and ignition off. Remove the radiator pressure cap.
2. Open the petcock at the bottom of the radiator and drain the coolant into a bucket.
3. Close the petcock and fill the radiator with water.
4. Start the engine and turn the heater control to hot. Add cooling system cleaner and idle the engine for 30 minutes (or as per the instructions on container).
5. Stop the engine and allow it to cool for five minutes. Drain the system.
6. Close the petcock, fill the radiator with water and let the engine idle for five minutes.
7. Repeat step No.5. Close the petcock.
8. Install new 50/50 mixture of water and ethylene glycol antifreeze/coolant

Kia’s B-Segment Provo Concept Showcases 4WD Hybrid Technology

2013-03-05_1643

Kia will unveil tomorrow, during the Geneva Motor Show, a B-segment concept car made to look like a road-legal racer, incorporating hybrid propulsion technology.

The coupe-looking hatchback concept, known as provo, mixes a gasoline-fueled turbo-charged engine with regenerative-electric motors to bring what Kia calls a smart-hybrid solution to this fun-focused concept.

The company stated that this provo concept points to Kia Motors’ future B-segment expansion plans.

Gregory Guillaume, chief designer at Kia’s European styling base in Frankfurt, described the concept as “an emotional and muscular car aimed at delivering pure fun and performance for today’s city-based enthusiast driver who longs for the curves of the open road.”

The provo combines a 1.6-liter Turbo GDi engine with smart-4WD-hybrid technology from an electric motor delivering an additional power surge to the rear wheels when required; this electric motor also allows low-speed electric-only motion. A seven-speed DCT transmission – Kia’s first – completes the technical package.

Guillaume went on: “This is entirely a car for European tastes and conditions. Designed purely at our Frankfurt studios the provo was conceived as a confident and single-minded statement of dynamism and energy to deliver a new sense of fun into the B-segment. The potent shaping displays a balanced and refined outline within a compact overall shape and the tiny front and rear overhangs enhance the balance within its proportions.”

Hidden behind a single piece of glass is the latest take on the Kia’s ‘tiger nose’ grille treatment linking straight into the Schreyer-inspired headlamp units that are made up of more than 850 tiny LEDs.  Kia said the programmable LEDs can be used to provide daytime running lights, full beam or even race-style configurations – as well as more humorous and decorative displays to add to provo’s sense of fun!

High-intensity blood-orange accents contrast with the grey-green ‘Storm Metal’ body color to draw the eye to particular aspects of the structure and equipment, while carbon fibre surfaces interplay with traditional materials and high-gloss or anodized aluminum to strengthen the connection to the track cars that inspired provo.

The door construction is unique – the doors are made from three individual panels – the outer panel, a carbon-fiber inner panel and a neoprene-covered inner section that also features the Storm Metal body color.

Echoing the sculpted flanks of the provo, the dashboard has a business-like main binnacle containing large analogue dials on a digital display and a smaller central display of other minor gauges, but because the display is digital it can be programmed to offer a selection of functions.

Set on the center tunnel are two control hubs – the engine stop-start button and drive selector for the seven-speed DCT transmission and a Multimedia Interface control.

This latter control allows the driver to select a variety of screen displays – as well as controlling infotainment functions.  In ‘normal’ mode the driver sees a speedometer, rev counter and sat-nav route instructions.  In ‘cruise’ the display is centered on a large scale map, route instructions and a speedometer, while in ‘track’ mode the display features just a large rev counter, a track-map and a lap-timer.  There is also a full ‘entertainment’ mode allowing visuals of music, radio and other information.

Guillaume commented: “The whole interior concept was designed around not having a big centre console, but instead using latest technology to provide excellent functionality in a clean, clear and attractive manner. By using a DCT gearbox we were able to get rid of the floor-mounted gear-shift and use paddles behind the steering wheel, which has blood-orange stitching and a race style straight-ahead indicator, allowing us to use the floor space for other controls resulting in a much tidier environment.  And because the seats are fixed we have full electric adjustment for the pedal box and steering column – further simplifying the interior and giving a perfect-fit for any driver.”
